Really digging Diane Setterfield’s ‘Thirteenth Tale’. I wouldn’t ordinarily pick up a title like this but I watched the film adaptation starring Olivia Coleman and really enjoyed the gothic tone.
Probably my favourite aspect of the novel is the protagonist’s love for books. ‘People disappear when they die. Their voice, their laughter, the warmth in their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All memory of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to this annihilation. For in the books they write they continue to exist. ‘
